2021-2022 Back-to-School
Independent Study Update

Per state law, districts are required to resume in-person instruction and are no longer permitted to continue distance learning.

For students who are not yet ready to return to full in-person instruction, Sacramento City Unified will offer a long-term independent study program, consistent with the recently enacted Assembly Bill (AB130).

As part of the independent study program, students will receive access to standards-aligned content and courses required for graduation and meeting the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) A-G course requirements. This may include independent assignments, reading, computer-based activities, and interactions with their teacher.

While most work will be completed independently, academic support consistent with AB 130 will be available for students. Live instruction, also called synchronous instruction, will vary by student segment, and will be consistent with AB 130*:

For TK – Grade 3: Students will receive an opportunity for daily synchronous instruction*

For Grades 4-8: Students will interact with teachers each school day, and will receive synchronous instruction at least once per week*

For Grades 9-12: Students will receive synchronous instruction at least weekly*

*Please note that while these are the minimum requirements under AB 130, SCUSD is planning to offer additional support and synchronous time as part of its independent learning program.
